The Roman empire had a population of 70 millions at its peak yet its armies never broke 500k even when massively conscripting people to fight hordes of barbarians invading it and with half the empire collapsing.
Don't know what to say except most people just won't fight or are not involved in fighting in ancient times. It was only with modern mobilization that see stuff like 10% of population being used for war.

What Ainz did was cleanse the lands by removing the rotten and decay. Tearing down the old tradition,cultures and rules. Reduce the population for easier control and repopulate it with new teachings. Now the housing market and lands are pretty cheap i would say. Plenty of resources to share and enough jobs for everyone.
Is paradise if you look at it that way.
Every fertile lands available would be immense. They would be live like nobles.

There were large ancient standing armies, just not Roman. In the NWs case I find it interesting that they have magic that mimics real world science yet still have abysmal conscription/serf armies. Even the Baharuth Empire besides it's knights was a joke.
