あたし is for women. 私 is a perfectly normal way of saying “I” for both men and women when in a polite environment, or when addressing kids (which is what he’s doing). 僕 is too snobbish, and meant to be used by the young anyway, and 俺 way too casual, and almost rude for this context. Given it’s a letter to fans, 私 is the most appropriate pronoun to use.
Isn't it commen for female authors to use masculine pen names? Like the FMA author. And one of the author comments talks about cute female assistants which would be less likely to fly if it was a dude.

I wouldn’t say it’s common. Arakawa did it, but not all female mangaka do it. Fir example, Rumiko Takahashi didn’t do it, Naoko Takeuchi, and Sakura Momoko didn’t either. In fact, I can probably list more who didn’t use male pen names, than those that did. As Hiromi Arakawa is the only one that springs to mind.
