I found myself less and less engaged with the story by the end. The rushed ending was pretty gauling, but by then I'd lost interest and only finished because I felt compelled to at least wee where the mediocrity train ended.

All he did was job until the DofD tournament, where they actually used his jobbing as part of their strategy to beat the capoeira team. Ever since then, he was in maybe 2 fights, both of which he won (with some help).

So the difference between Kenichi who was born with a predisposition to train his ass off is functionally not very different from someone like Naruto who was born with almost every advantage in the book but also had to invest a tiny bit of effort here and there.

Naruto's character arc was never about becoming strong through hard work. He was always strong, he just purposely fucked up because he felt being ridiculed and laughed at was preferable to being ignored and shunned. His story was about working hard to be acknowledged by others. It just so happened that the most respected position he knew of was also held by the strongest.

Kenichi's character arc was first about survival and then about protecting those that were important to him. And since he was actually weak, he had to work for it. With how often he almost quit, he definitely was not predispositioned to train hard. The only "talent" he had was the ability to take a beating, since he had been beaten up for the majority of middle school and high school.

I didn't say it was. I was only mentioning Naruto as an example of an MC who was born with a lot of advantages in both talent and infrastructure. Kenichi is similar in that you could give lots of characters in Kenichi's universe the same pep talks and lessons and most of them would never train as hard as Kenichi did. Because Kenichi's genetic/inherited talent was working hard.

To be fair, Kenichi was never that hardworking either. He fucked up and got cocky on many occasions. His advantage over everyone else always was the fact that he had very good teachers who knew how to inspire him and get out the best of him.

He also never gave up. His endless determination got praise from his enemies too.
