Just finished Part 5 of the webnovel.
To be honest, the writing is already starting to grate on me. The banter isn't as funny as I think the author thinks The worst is Subaru's development where I feel like he only develops from a problem the author introduces in the arc itself.
Emilia is also pretty ehhh. Like you'd think she gets better but she never does. She never really develops, it's just that the author actually lets her do things now. I'd say Emilia in Part 5 doesn't feel different than Emilia in Part 1.
She's never given that moment to shine. Not even the cluster fuck that was Part 4 where she's meant to have 'awakened' or some shit. Fuck, Rem does more in a coma than Emilia.
On the good side, the characters are somewhat likable, I guess.
Part 4 was much more longer than it needed to be. It tried to go back to the "mystery" of part 1 and 2 which I liked but it handled it awfully. Most of the obstacles in the mystery were just "People not telling Subaru anything" and resolved with "People finally telling Subaru things".
Part 5 was okay. I skipped the Liliana Priscilla fight but overall it felt like a best hits movie/tourney arc. I guess the author had given up on writing mystery altogether.

What really hooked me was the mystery aspect of the first two parts. While I appreciate the author developing the MC, it all feels rather uneeded.

Not yet. I mainly stayed with the WN after watching the anime.
If I think of five like a "Filler movie" where everyone gets to show off, I think it does better as that than whatever 3 and 4 were trying to do.
Like, I'd say 3 maybe would be better on some days when you can appreciate what the author was going for. But 5 is just this nice safe cute thing.
Thinking about it, maybe 3 would be over 5 if only because I skipped the Priscilla Liliana fight and didn't feel like I lost anything.
4 was just too bloated especially the first part where the only reason information is blocked is "Lol fuck you I don't wanna tell you". Plus it really bungles Emilia's time to shine. I still haven't seen why she deserves to be King when everyone else is nice. Plus Garfs translated dialogue and Rosswells aaaaasssssss well. Fuck that shit.

I also heard the LN Part 4 is vastly different. I tried reading the differences in the wiki but it's hard for me to imagine the big changes. Feels like a lot of it was streamlined

Most of the talk of the Arc 4 LN you will see here is from people who liked the WN version alot. Infact I rate it my favorite or tied with 3.
What they did to streamline it was to add a plot device magic crystal that teleports Subaru to locations to skip exposition, character interaction, etc. Because of that, the side characters are extremely gutted, several of my favorite scenes are gone, and some of the more impactful scenes lose their bite. Plus how the LN bends over backwards for the anime retconning Subaru's feelings for Rem basically, anyone telling you otherwise is lying. And how they cut Puck's backstory plot line, so in arc 3 he was just useless just because instead of his contract having a clause.
The only positive change would be the rework of Emilia's flashback.

What the fuck is going on with your taste? 3 and 4 at the very bottom? Below even 1 and 5? I know what you mean when you say arc 4 is too long but it has some of the best payoff in the series with tons of interesting interactions and plot points. Emilia may bring the writing down whenever she's there but the rest of it more than makes up for it.
