I wish people would at least read the Bible before they perpetuate these claims. There are few exceedingly weird angels in the Bible; almost always they are just dudes. Man they really fucked up with rebuild Ramiel. In the original, it's this big, scary, unstoppable, incomprehensible thing, like an evil 2001 monolith. Awe-inspiring.
But in rebuild, it spins into all these crazy shapes at ridiculous speed, and the effect is that it feels less weighty, more frivolous. When you have a big thing that's supposed to feel absolutely massive, you can't have it zip around like that.

I can't say if it's better or worse because I still really like both, but I got the impression classic Ramiel was actually scared of Unit 01. Rebuild doesn't have the scene where Nerv tows out a balloon that only looks like Unit 01 and it's lasered from miles away for pointing a fake gun.

And it was interesting as hell the first time that the drill was obviously inorganic, somebody built that complicated machine out of smaller, specially made parts, but that doesn't make a lot of sense to what Angels ended up being. Morphing a drill and corkscrewing into the ground is probably an improvement.
