It's not his fault, it's his upbringing. That he gave to himself in secrecy from the priest who raised him, with the mother he abducted from prison, buried alive and kept like that for years, then murdered the priest for discovering and burned down the village.

If you pay more attention to the plot, it's clear that Diavolo only tried to obtain Trish after the hitman team had discovered her and tried to take her to use her against the boss.
