To be fair R+J was an action drama. There were sword fights as action scenes. It's just hard to not be able to spice things up considering there wasn't CGI in King James I's England.

Most characters did. I remember there being a pretty strict formula, where a character would be in two fight scenes- one where they appear to be losing until they reveal their secret technique and pull out a victory, and then another where they get killed, usually by someone who appeared to be losing until they revealed their secret technique. It made the pacing good overall, but it meant that the likable characters ended up feeling like they weren't used enough.

Way I see it, the Koga group was better at espionage and more subtle killings with the mother of all trump cards in the patriarch. The Iga's were the ones that were better at walking in the front door and murdering everyone present with the hardest counter to other ninjas in the stopnojutsu eyes.

Yeah, both sides wanted to kill the other across the board but it's a waste of good talents to end them like this.
