I just checked and the first chapter of the series says it's February 1996. Going from part 1 to part 2 it says it's been "a few months" and then part 3 says 6 months so you're right it's only 1997. I was misremembering and thought 2 or so years had passed from part 1 to 2

You're right, I apologise. What Kaiji really needed was 50 chapters of Endou being a bumbling buffon governed by a hunger for tendies and a fear for his butthole being penetrated. Truly, Fukumoto is a masterful writer to give us such brilliant, exciting scenarios.

I'm not up to date with Kaiji, but calling FKMT a bad writer after he put out so many masterpieces that inspired many (fans and mangaka alike) is retarded. Japanese people are still celebrating Akagi's vigil night every year.

You can criticize the current state of Kaiji or Shin Kurosawa being a thing, but FKMT has put out enough great things to establish him as a talented writer.

not him, but if this is your take from it, you're pretty delusional. in the other arcs, no matter how slow, there was always a steady advancement forwards. this arc, since we got endou's POV, the story hasn't moved one bit, and it has been entirely inconsequential. you could've literally summed these 5 chapters in a page or less. just put "endou's search for kaiji was full of dead ends" and leave it would've been the same

Inconsequential parts in a story aren't bad by definition, but if you're following that stuff weekly it's very understandable that you'd dislike it.

If someone read part 6 in a batch they'd probably have no issue with this little side story and maybe quite enjoy it. It's okay because FKMT actually puts out a lot of Kaiji chapters. If it were Berserk, then it'd be bad because Miura can't be assed to put out more than 2 chapters a year, so having those 2 chapters be useless island fairy shit is actually bad.

i remember in part 4 FKMT spent like what, 4 volumes on Kazuya's novel. Ultimately inconsequential and pointless to the story, but it was used to develop Kazuya's character. I guess FKMT isn't allowed to give his character depth anymore because autists will complain HURR WHERE DA GAMBLES
