The ToP was very satisfying to me as a lizardfag. I was honestly expecting Frieza to do something rash and stupid to betray Universe 7 and get erased from existence or at least sent back to hell for it within a couple episodes of the tournament start. I never imagined he'd undergo actual character development and even get something close to a happy ending that keeps him around for future appearances. I was actually impressed with how they made the "hero and villain work together" formula fresh and interesting by using the one character we never thought it could ever work with for it. Ideally, Frieza would have ended the arc as a God of Destruction, but I think that could still be his final fate.

It was all such a pleasant surprise to me especially because as of Resurrection F, he was still being stubborn and spiteful to his detriment, and it basically just played out the same way his return in the Trunks saga did. The movie left me wanting because of that and they really made up for it here. You're right about that, it really could have been so much more, but I've only ever expected some light entertainment out of it. It's ultimately just Toei milking their sacred cow for all it's worth again. The censorship sucks and characters from long-running properties always end up turned into caricatures, unfortunately. Goku has never been a paragon of justice and has always prioritized a good fight over common sense and the well-being of others. He gave Perfect Cell a senzu bean before tossing Gohan at him. That said, this is a universe where death practically does not exist, so moral dissonance is to be expected.
