How did you read that as a no u? I outlined that there was no support to the statement, the Razor itself was misquoted in the previous thread, and that the Razor is a rejected form of argument, a bad one. How did you read that?

Bare in mind, that this dictum isn't really a logical argument, or a way to criticize someone else's argument. Hitchens is just saying that this is how skeptics should conduct themselves: Don't waste time arguing against claims made by someone who doesn't (and I would elaborate it by saying "refuses to") give any evidence. It's about dismissing something so as not to waste time disproving it. There is no court of logical argumentation, or even a concept of "burden of proof" outside a court of law beyond what individuals concoct for themselves.

It's not broadly applicable in life at all, because there are a lot of things that a person simply can't present evidence for, but still should be taken seriously. And even when someone has no evidence, it's often worth it to entertain their claim because one type of error may be more severe than another, i.e. a false positive is often weighted differently than a false negative.

As an example, you just get in the car with your wife, and she says she thinks the oven is on. No evidence for the claim. But there's two types of errors possible, go back to check and see if the oven is on, finding out that it's not (false positive), or leave, assuming it's off and the house burns down (false negative). Waste some time or lose everything.

People deal with these kinds of situations on the regular to the point where we take it for granted. The truth is we act on unsubstantiated claims all the time, because we either trust the person making them, or consider one type of error vastly more severe than another overcoming lack of evidence.

So I think it would be charitable to say that Hitchens is primarily referring to religious / political / philosophical arguments where the stakes for the different possible errors are either negligible or unclear.
