This was my conclusion. When Hondomachi talks to Fukuda in the well-well, she says that what he really wants is to drill through his own head again (or something to that effect). That seems to suggest that his hole is superficial, incomplete, or unsatisfying -- i.e. not a true part of his identity. But for how much the show loves to explain every tiny detail, it seems weird that this was completely glossed over.
