Bakemonogatari does not deserve to be on this list.

I've seen all of them except Urotsukidouji. I'm kinda a cool guy like that though.

24. Bakemonogatari”
25. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Why not? It's a tour-de-force from Shinbo/Oishi/Takeuchi and easily one of the most visually creative and experimental TV anime ever made. Every episode is packed full of interesting design and art ideas.

Only gundam and Eva.
Also why are they are recommending the movies over the show.

Shinbo has made better shows. I've only seen the first few episodes of the franchise and didn't feel it was really for me. Maybe I'd like it more if I watched more but I'm not really into harems.

The 0079 movies have improved animation and just overall more fleshed out in directorial vision than the TV series that suffered tons of pitfalls throughout it's production (like Yas being sidelined by illness.) And culturally, it was the movies that were mainly responsible for the Gundam boom, the ratings for the TV series didn't improve until near the end. Ideally you'd watch both though.

Perfect blue is better than millennium actress. But if I were to put a movie made by satoshi kon it would be paprika.

Wait, Colorful the 1999 TV series or Colorful the 2010 film?

The 2010 film. Though more people really should watch the 1999 series, it's a lot of fun.

All of them. But these lists are stupid. If you didn't watch anything on that list you are fine. Nobody cares.

Wait, seriously? I watched this on a whim and it didn't seem like anything special, just a ho hum ecchi OVA. What I'm missing that would put it on a list next to the rest of these?

>Essential

>Gundam and Macross movies over the TV shows
Plebs.

About 9 of them, and 3 I've had in my hard drive since forever but never watched them.

It's maybe not the best Kawajiri work but it does have nearly all his specialties, hyper-detailed drawings, great realistic animation with an emphasis on rigid geometrical form, powerful visual direction and design, emphasis on gothic horror and body mutation, explicit ultraviolence and sexuality. It's a really good OVA imo.

I've seen all and the most pretentious garbage there is flcl and jinroh. Both are just praised for animation. Japanese storytelling is really mediocre if you think about it.

Strange because FLCL has possibly the best-written dialogue and metaphors of any animation I've ever seen, Japanese or not.

Seen all of there except for Colorful and Urotsukidōji.

Shit list.

Heidi, Girls of the Alps, speedreader-kun

Japan's official 100 years of anime list; anime that are a part of anime history, are popular and well loved there (missing some important ones due to licensing issues) in case anyone wants a longer list

Is what I meant to say. I am blind, alright? You can't just bully me like this.
>tons of mediocre garbage
Name a couple, please. There is plenty of titles I don't like, but I see only one mediocre garbage here Sword of the Stranger

NHK's 100 years of anime poll

Attached: NHK100 May2017.png (1112x4208, 1.22M)

Why are you posting all these? These are just mindless audience polls while the one in the OP is by respected anime scholar and journalist Yuichiro Oguro who has been in the industry over 20 years.

His list is garbage. It's the fandom that decide what's essential and what's not.

The ones in the OP may be "essential" but these are the ones nips actually give a fuck about these days, this is for comparison in tastes and trends

Keep posting these lists.

Well at least try to reserve judgment until you've seen Bake all the way through. Don't look at it through the lens of it being some "deep" show or whatever it's championed as, just enjoy it for its incredible visuals and witty dialogues.

>no Takahata
>Horus
>Heidi

It's lacking in context: essential for artistic purposes, not whatever the lowest common demoninator likes to lap up.

these lists have the GAY

If you're going to post lists then at least post ones made by vetted individuals as opposed to public voters. Might as well post the MAL top 50 if that's what you're going to do.

Attached: 1451307372209.jpg (1430x5054, 2.33M)

>Love Live! wins
>Utapri (otome) wins

How is that homo?

A random "scholar" doesn't get to decide what's artistic either.

It still isn't essential if nip fans don't see it that way

Pretty sure new nip fans would be able to recognize only around 10 of those

i want to kill your rec threads!

Oguro has been watching anime and writing screenplays since before you were born. He's devoted countless hours to researching animation and is incredibly well connected within Japan's industry. Of course his opinion is going to carry more weight than that of the average anime viewer because he's just that much more informed. No one's saying your favourite cartoon is shit or that you're not allowed to like what you like so calm down, get your diaper changed and come back to this thread when you're ready to discuss things civilly.

Appealing to authority does nothing. Accusing others of being angry for simply refusing to lick some random boot also does nothing.
The fandom decides the essentials that newcomers eventually watch and you know it.

Not him but one Pro is still one guy, it is the fans that decide what is essential and what continues as the new trend

>6. GHOST IN THE SHELL
>7. Jin-Roh: Wolf Brigade
>9. MINDGAME
>12. Colorful
>13. Lupin III Part 1
>19. Neon Genesis Evangelion
>22. FLCL
>24. Bakemonogatari

mindgame and eva are the best here. bakemonogatari was pretty mediocre, the "witty" dialogue falls flat every time.

Now do it for manga pelase.

It's not just Oguro, almost everything on that list barring a few picks like Urotsukidoji has always been and continues to be incredibly acclaimed and well respected by Japanese anime fans. Japanese MAL and Animage character popularity polls mean hardly anything because they mostly sample the general public and have only ever cared about what's current. Try interacting with Japanese anime otaku who actually watch anime as a hobby and don't just occasionally catch random programs on TV

I'm more focused on reading more notable manga than anime these days.

>Japanese MAL
There's a Japanese MAL? Do they have manga as well(or a manga site)?

>still appealing to authority
>still denying that word-of-mouth is what rules a medium
Okay buddy, whatever you say.

Numbers decide what stays "in"
The casual fans are the ones that matter not niche fans of high art
"Japanese anime otaku" are the ones that pick Love Live! and Fate, etc

>the "witty" dialogue falls flat every time.
says the english speaker who dont kno shit

Gundam and Macross didn't really pick up traction until after they finished airing and of course you couldn't watch things online back then (Japanese piracy laws of today notwithstanding) so a lot of nips ended up seeing the compilation movies first. Their superior production values also make them much more accessible.
It has nothing to do with authority and I'm not sure what that proves anyways. Stop projecting that weird strawman onto me please. Like I said before, more informed opinions are naturally more valuable and 99% of OP's list consists of popular and critically acclaimed works enjoyed by every generation of anime fan which you would know if you'd put even the tiniest amount of effort into researching the cultural zeitgeist surrounding anime in Japan.
You use the word "otaku" too lightly. I bet you consider yourself one.

>source: my ass
Where's the popular list that has half of that stuff in it? Oh yeah, it doesn't exist because Japanese otaku aren't recommending those to their peers.

Attached: 1461196336281.gif (500x516, 152.26K)

Not who you're replying to, but

>reserve judgment until you've seen Bake all the way through
Holy fucking what?

Attached: 1535434865151.jpg (458x462, 138.27K)

>You use the word "otaku" too lightly. I bet you consider yourself one.
It means a person obsessed with something, like train otaku, stamp otaku, idol otaku, etc; and no, I don't consider myself one
You are trying to force something as essential when it is a list made on one guy's opinion, doesn't matter if it is professional and experienced or not he is still just one person and other people's "essentials" don't matter to the nip fans at all

You're not sticking it to the man by trying to convince me that anime that are popular, influential, and technically high quality should not be essential experiences for people who are even the slightest fans of anime.

I'm not trying to convince you of anything. The truth does not bend to you or your scholar, Japanese otaku simply don't tell their friends to watch garbage like Colorful and the like; I'm just making fun of your stupidity at this point.

Again not him, I'm not saying the OP list is bad, I'm saying new nip fans don't consider it essential at all
They use anime as entertainment and escapism and they are actual obsessed otaku, none of what he considers essential appeals to those fans

>your scholar
You're clearly misunderstanding the intent of this list. It's not some elite "authority" trying to lord his taste over the masses. It's a recommendation list.
>garbage like Colorful
Stop cherrypicking.
