Hijiriido was hard to design, they had a lot of scrapped ideas. Her collar is supposed to look like a drill. They also tried a pointy hat and frilly idol clothes. Aoki thought very hard about how to show off Hijiriido's belly.
The brilliant detectives are supposed to be the person in their peak. Sakaido's shoes and scarf look like lightning like from his well. In the desert well, originally Anaido was going to wrap his shirt around his head, but they didn't want him to cover his face and be shirtless.
Ikariya isn't good at drawing cute girls and mostly draws old guys. He really wanted to do episode 9 to storyboard a realistic fight. He had Narihisago get badly beaten up so that using a gun wouldn't seem unfair. Narihisago's scenes with Kiki were hard because they're both just sitting there.
Kiki's voice actor, Miyamoto Yume, originally auditioned for Hondoumachi and they picked her because she sounded raw and wouldn't be overpowered by Tsuda Kenjirou in their scenes together.
Challenger's voice actor, Sugita Tomokazu, originally auditioned for main characters. They picked him because he's good at taunting. He added in the laughs after Maijou said the challenger enjoys fights. The Challenger was probably fighting and put on his sweater when Narihisago rang.
In episode 10, everyone else cried at the phone call scene, but Aoki did the storyboard so he didn't. They spent a long time drawing all the family photos early on, and had to redraw some later. They asked Maijou for a story to go with the flashback scene, but it was too long to include, so it's a BD extra. And they redrew the scene to match Tsuda Kenjirou's voice.
It was really hard to make sure the timeline was consistent with all the dates that appeared, and they had to go back and fix it when they found out they made a mistake. They don't have much staff now, there's only 5 people doing genga for episode 12.

He was technically incited to kill by John Walker, assisted with the investigation, and is partially responsible for exposing the Chief. Supposedly he also lost his urge to kill when Hondo drilled herself, so he shouldn't be a danger anymore. But he's also killed multiple people and certainly won't be able to just walk.
Honestly I think the best we can hope for is Hondo goes back to being a real world investigator and Fukuda somehow ends up as her partner.
