A lot of it has to do with authors' desire to get romantic/sexual affection from girls without ever having to put themselves out there or actually navigate the complexities of a relationship. Same reason why there are so many tropes about non-blood related sibling romances, characters who fall in love when they're like 6 and never let go of it, and so on.
