Because in battle most people, including plenty of commanding officers, tend to act stupid. Fucking hell, half of Hannibal's victories during the Second Punic War were due to Roman commanders deciding to stick to the book instead of thinking about where they could be ambushed from. Same for Alexander the great in Gaugamela-Darius fell hook and sinker for the bait and got most of his army completely wrecked while he was looking the other way. In a lot of wars the winner is not genius but actually just competent.

It's alright if you know that you're getting into some survival game tier stuff from the very start. Kaname is a cool MC since he is a fearless motherfucker since the very start and only grows from there. Animation is alright, not really bad, but not special either. I think most people who'll tell you this looks horrible haven't watched too much currently airing anime.
