Even with Negi's shitty writing it would be extremely easy to deliver a better ending if 1, 2 or 3 won. People wouldn't complain that the winner never tried to fight for her love, that she has the least amount of screentime, that she barely interacted with Fuutarou. There would be no drama because they already accepted each other as rivals, they wouldn't delay dating Fuutarou, their dates wouldn't be awkward. Even Miku would probably mouthrape him on the very first date, let alone Ichika and Nino. Both Nino and Miku could move to study in Tokyo together with Fuutarou. Ichika could probably ask to change her agent in a year or two and move to Tokyo too. Only Yotsuba was locked to her stupid uni. Not a single one of them would ever agree to share their honeymoon. Negi would need to deliberately sabotage the ending to make it worse than Yotsuba's.

The time will decide who was right - 22i or Negi, who will be remembered as a hack and who as a complete and utter shit writer.

But that's the exact reason why 4 won. It was the closest to the cop out harem end without being one. In the end of the day, what negi wanted to write wasn't yotsuba no hanayome or ichikaninomiku no hanayome, it was a quintuplet mango. While I hate the ending, I get what negi was trying to go for.

The premise was and will always be one bride, that's what made it interesting.
But if you put it that way - personally I feel alternative timelines is fine for some cases, but the main timeline should always be established.
The way 22ui did it was more like, 5 equal timelines.
