Some times its only a month heads up Which if they do stretch it out to 153 would just about make it a month if they announce it this week. Or they could have seen the anime spoiling the ending as a 2 months heads up, or, and most likely in my opinion, it's just getting dropped and we only get a chapter or two of warning.

Although it was clear it was ending for a while, 5toubun's ending was on a really short notice (I think only a couple of weeks or two before the end).

They announced it shortly before the final volume worth of chapters came. They may not have given a concrete number but they did say "this will be the last volume." So functionally nine weeks in advance. But also that's a different magazine.

It comes down to thee kind of Romance Uruka by her very nature of being a childhood friend. And I mean "childhood friend" in a very specific narrative sense that is she is present and with the MC (as in has been there continuously not meet once and then left or the like) before the start of the story with a pre-established relationship and feelings before the story starts. This means the relationship can't develop. It's static until they are finally pushed together. So all we have are the sort of collection of moments you would see people make to prove Ash and Misty are into each other. Because without development and growth that's all there is.

And that would be, functional as sub-plot romance but once the education focus curled up and died the romance had to take its place as the central tension holding the series together, and we get this static romance with a copy paste job of every generic genki childhood friend at its core who is also static, and we're expected to be invested in this static romance or the static charterer. Shocking that the best most people can muster "well it's fine. Its makes sense in universe." (That last sentence was sarcasm I'm not shocked at all. This is like romance scientifically designed to be as unengaging as possible.)

I said that a mostly episodic series like Bokuben was perfect for an omnibus end, but I never thought the author was gonna really do it.

This doesn't feel like a pity end desu. 22i developed some characters way too much like rizu and sensei and left some characters ends too open like fumino and asumi, perhaps he actually planned for this

So from now on it'll be a battle about whose ending is "canon" or not, because I doubt most will take a "Uruka's end is canon, the others are what ifs" lying down.
