Masks work when worn by sick people, including asymptomatic people. They don't work when worn by healthy people. The problem is that asymptomatic people weren't wearing masks since they seemed healthy. Doing so, they've been breathing and coughing up viral particles upon static surfaces (poles, doors, bags, etc.) allowing much better transfer of the disease. It's not fucking rocket science.
