About 6 years ago I started getting really interested in brick and stonemasonry, so I watched a lot of youtube videos on how to do it, read a bunch of books, and bought tools and practiced in my parents' back yard.
I eventually got a job with a charity housing development program that builds homes for poorfags and worked as a 1099 contractor for them, and they paid breddy gud since all salaries were tax writeoffs.
I started posting my work on facebook and through word of mouth got offered a lot of side jobs by people, making patios, walkways, BBQ pits, stone underpinning for mobile homes, I even managed to make a pretty good fireplace. The more I did it the better I got at it.
I took a year off and was about to get back into it then coronavirus happened, so now I'm chilling in my house doing nothing. Anyone have any similar stories?
Currently working for the police doing digital forensics. Hoping to get myself some skills/contacts so that I can eventually transition myself in to working privately or freelance in a few years. Might even start up my own lab down the line, but that’s decades away.
Andrew Russell
That sounds interesting user. What got you interested in that sort of work? Do you have a professional education or are you self taught?
Andrew Davis
Got a degree in it at university since I always enjoyed forensics and computers, figured I might as well just merge the 2 together. Also figured crime ain’t going away anytime soon and the way things are going literally every case is gunna have some form of a digital aspect to it. Left uni and did shit restaurant work until I got accepted somewhere for a forensics job. Not been working in the field long but some of the stories are pretty crazy. Could even write a book done the line about the shit I’ve seen/experienced.

I starter a limo/chauffeur biz at 23, been doing it for 7 years. Was really conservative and never expanded because of times like this exactly.
In the UK and im sure in America, (if thats where you are user?) You can make some serious money doing stonemasonry. A friend trained as a stonemason and has been doing some big projects lately. I helped him price some jobs up and was shocked at how much he could make. One job was renovating the stone work at a big mansion and replacing the driveway and it was going to net him £250k. He's a rubbish business man though so ended up fucking it up unfortunately, but if you are reliable and know your stuff or can at least learn quick on your feet you can make some serious cash.
Grayson Martin
Stone & Granite worktops are a good money maker. If you can learn how to fit those well you can also make some good cash also.
Henry Rodriguez
Yes upwards of 50p per brick in the uk. (used to be). Bricklayers were making up to 2k per week in the summer.

tell us some storys
Jaxson Bell
If you do good brick/stone work you should still be busy even with coronavirus. Lots of people that are rich looking to get work done around their homes and developers that are still working on projects that require stone/brick work
Nathan Cooper
Yeah between regular contracting and side jobs the most recent year I did it I made about $225k and I only worked 3 days per week.
I am constantly getting emails and calls from locals, especially now. I still do jobs here and there when I feel like it. I have actually lived way under my means since moving out so I still have a six figure savings account. I just cba to go out in the shit storm. I'm not worried about getting sick, but people have been out panic buying stuff and it takes longer to get supplies at the moment. Not worth it right now.

when I was 21 I was a "meme warrior" in 2015 I made some stuff on youtube on stuff I made on my phone/ipad. Then from that ad revenue I bought a MacBook Air; I know shit but still and upgrade. From their I started making better meme videos with FCP, Motion & Photoshop. Then I started dating a roastie who worked in a talent agency and from that when I started getting big $$ freelance jobs. I got to travel to Hawaii, New York, Australia, and Switzerland. I edited vlogs, stuff for certain think tanks. Did high paying gig in Aus for the gay marriage thing where I made an anti-gay marriage ad. Then I started working in studio city in LA. I was just editing weed commercials and banners for the weed business whatever else my manager could throw at me.
Then one day I come in with a green protein shake and fat whale says "that looks gross"
I responded with "not as gross as your muffin top"
her crying whale sounds still crack me up to this day. Was fired on the spot but my manager thought it was pretty funny lol.
Then I edited porn for a few months. Got paid in crypto. Made like $5k from editing porn and that $5k turned into around $40k during the 2017 crypto bull run.
Was a need from 2017-mid 2019.
I started Nursing school a few months ago but still comfy on from the money I made

Is working with lime putty much different then working with cement? I see lots of old brickwork ruined with cement. Would like to learn how to repair.
Oliver Russell
What kind of cement? In masonry if you're not using lime or portland, you're fucking over your client, and they're both considered classes of cement. Lime has good flexibility and autogenous healing. The set time is shit but the permeability makes it much better for most jobs. The only time I ever use portland instead of lime is if I'm doing any work in a damp or wet area, since portland can set while wet due to impermeability regarding water.
Joshua Walker
Also if you want to learn how to "repair shitty old mortar work" you need to learn a process called repointing stone. That's something you'll have to look up but it's not a very tedious process and you can probably do it yourself without the help of an experienced mason if you have at least two functional brain cells.
Hope this helps.
Jackson Rodriguez
uh no.to many beaners cutting jobs in their backyards.
Michael Peterson
Very similar. I've had a tile business for 6 years now. I net $50 per hour for every hour of labor.
I like it but it's fucking my body up. Wish I knew how to lay brick and stone I've heard it can be great money
Zachary Price
How's the money?
Colton Mitchell
It isn't about undercutting competition. The profit margin on turning rough granite into a countertop is pretty high. The downside is the tools required to do it efficiently are pretty expensive and take up a lot of room.
I personally haven't done any granite countertops. Backsplashes and bathroom finish tiling are the closest thing to finish masonry I've ever done. I'm more of a structural mason so take my opinions with a grain of salt.
Jeremiah Bennett
Quick rundown on editing porn? Is it as grim as it looks?
Anthony Bell
Can be good money there.
What stops me though is you need a big van or truck for the stone and you need a second set of hands sometimes even a third guy.
I like businesses where I can work alone and still make money.
Landon Gonzalez
i run a granite shop with all lthe edge machines and saws. im breaking even right now competing with beaners cutting the shit off the back of there truck. Its lucrative if you dont scale and you keep doing it in your back yard. Only a matter of time before the city starts snooping around though.
Brody Bailey
Good to know. Thanks
Gavin Richardson
Congrats. Every tiler I've ever met has been a total bro and pleasure to work with when we cross paths.
That being said my biggest piece of advice in masonry is to work out regularly and don't eat shitty food. Stay hydrated and stay active. If your body doesn't work, you don't make any money. You absolutely NEED to stay in shape and fit. Do lots of stretches, eat nutritious meals at regular intervals, don't overeat, and lookup exercises to strengthen your back and core.
I have known many very skilled masons forced into early retirement because their health habits were poor. You absolutely have to get in the gym if you want to make it past 50. Another good tip I can say is don't get too greedy. Don't make yourself work 6-7 days a week. You need rest. Spend time with your wife and kids. Play fetch with your dog. Play some video games. Read a book.
Elijah Clark
im getting mexican vibes from you
Jason Thomas
Bumping this shit since it's an actual business thread on this godforsaken crypto ridden board for once
Daniel Baker
Why's that? I'm not Mexican btw just curious.
Dominic Allen
I hear that. I only work 3 days a week.
My health routine is:
2 massages a month 2 chiropractic adjustments per month 1 Hot Yoga session per week
I stay pretty healthy but I'm getting a little trouble in my neck and shoulders
Eli Carter
It's pretty fucking rare around here.
Jason Lopez
what would the demographic consumer be for a private digital foresnsics lab? soiboy husbands trying to prove their cheating thots are cucking them?
Anthony Ramirez
because you're profit margins are to high to me. you have guys that work for you, do you pull permits etc etc? or you just do shit through faceberg
Mason Jenkins
Start lifting bro you won't regret it. You will notice a difference in your flexibility and ability to maintain a good pace. If you want to get into masonry the best way to start is through an apprenticeship. If you tell them you have a lot of tiling experience I doubt they'll start you as a brick mong or mortar bitch. Barring that there are a handful of really good books that I can recommend
Modern Masonry 8th edition The Art of the Stone Mason Practical Masonry : A Guide to the Art of Stone Cutting
Grayson Myers
Portland cement is what I was referring to. I saw an old church wall a long time ago and in some areas the face of the brick had cracked off. Later I found out that it was because someone used Portland cement to repair but with the old bricks. I see this damage a lot and thought it would be a good skill to learn.
Nolan Thompson
yes
Owning a service business sucks. just got 25k from PPP though
I recommend getting a real education or speculating on shitcoins.
I have a few 100's of thousands of dollars - its all worthless though. Who even cares anymore
Levi Bennett
Thanks
David Thomas
My guess would be agencies would contract them out.
The only people who worked for me were family members. I live in rural New Hampshire. We don't have Mexicans here. Only French-Canadians.
Joseph Morales
I worked as a grphic designer, but seeing that everybody is just downloading templates and doing the same exact shit I went over to editorial design. Made books for every amateur writer to sell in amazon. Bought a couple thousand bucks in facebook ads and did five figures in two months. Grew tired of it. went back to neetdom.
Mason Campbell
i have no business sense bros but im smart and a hard worker and have capital and good ideas but i can never see a path to getting them off the ground. the only business ive done successfully was drug dealing and loan sharking as a side gig and ive made a lot of easy money from it but i cant figure out how to do something normal. like for instance i live in a country right now that desperately needs some high end peanut butter and want to start importing adams peanut butter and even growing and making my own but i havs no clue how the fuck id import peanut butter here without getting retarded prices on it. feels like everyone else can do this kind if thing no problem but me. feels bad man.
>I have a few 100's of thousands of dollars - its all worthless though. Who even cares anymore
Go to therapy user.
Wyatt Perez
im interested in this now. I hate granite industry because there is to many people in the process as a fabricator. buy the slab talk to designer pay some stupid fucking beaner to do a job the he fucks up. Pay a guy to go around the jobs sites/customers homes for a surprise visit to make sure they are not fucking anything up.
Logan Ortiz
Bought an invisible fence business last March. Did 80k total revenue last year. So far at 40k since January 1st. Things are looking up.
