Only validated nodes can contribute by uploading flips. There's currently a consensus based voting system that can remove faulty flips and punishes the creator by making them lose their rewards. In the future there will probably be harsher penalties such as killing the validation status of the node.

The whole flip creating/solving mechanism is the core of the Idena project; Proving that 1 Node = 1 Human. If you don't upload your new flips before the validation session, your node gets suspended/killed. Which means you can't mine
