This is the inevitable result of using fiat currency to enforce a regime of constant inflation, it makes having a pile of unused cash very undesirable. When america was at its peak growth rate in the late 1800's/early 1900's, there was constant deflation (literally shit got cheaper for everyone year over year, standards of living exploded upwards), government was limited due to no income or payroll taxes, and savings were extensive both for individuals and companies.

Yes government expanded in the late 1800's but it was still miniscule compared to today and 90% of people paid no federal taxes at all outside of tariffs. Late 1800's is when america became the largest economy in the world, since implementing the welfare state and the military industrial complex in the 1950s-60s, america has been declining in the global stage for decades, and standards of living for the working class have been declining since then as well (education test scores, family formation, savings, relative health, social well being, local communities, etc etc)
