Depends on the place IMO, I know of a busy restaurant that probably does around 30-50 orders during rush hour. I know I would prefer retail in a chill environment rather than having to deal with more customers because a lot of them are assholes in restaurants.

The current system of tipping is dumb. Tips should not be mandatory or expected. You should not be required to get a handout from customers for doing your job just to make ends meet. Employers should be responsible for compensating their employees fairly. If employers are unable to hire employees capable of doing their job at a reasonable cost, they should not be in business.

Good rule if thumb, if it has a drive thru window, dont tip, if it doesnt, tip. There are some exceptions, but if you're uncertain you can just briefly ask another customer something like, "I'm not from around here, do I tip my server at this place?" You'll be fine if they arent assholes.
