Idena already has 1100 nodes running, each owned by one person with one vote. Probably already more decentralized than most other projects out now..

This is called being smart.
Check out the discord for invites. In a couple epochs me and the other anons who joined will be giving them to others too, or at least that's what I will do.
You'll have to be lucky to get one randomly, but it's easy to get one right before or right after validation, so keep the node running if it isn't costing you anything, as you might get an invite 15 mins before validation like it happened to me.
There's also some sort of games to get one going on lately on the discord.
Not to mention the number of invites per person got increased.

Plus humans now validate their identities on their light-client cell phone apps which can function on a bare minimum of band resources.

I think it's different. If someone ddos a miner, they lose their potential to mine blocks for however long the ddos lasts, and it's an expensive attack. But with Idena they only need to ddos you for a few minutes during validation, and you lose your income until the next epoch.

most of the people, including myself, are mining on a 5$/month vps (server) with 1gb ram and who knows what cpu. The connection is very fast on those, though.
You can do it on any pc as long as you have a connection faster than a dial-up
