Because WW2 saved it by merit of providing a plethora of opportunities to the lower and middle class, who were then able to pull themselves out of poverty with government IOU's that secured them huge injections of money that landed them stable housing, investment materials, and the ability to pay for basic essentials for years simply because of their involvement with the war effort. The price of goods were also pathetically low thanks to overproduction and as such everybody was able to afford whatever they wanted for decades. As such, tons of workers became business owners, tons of business owners could hire tons of works, and things blossomed from there.

As of right now, 99% of military supplies are produced by an extremely small minority of corporate entities and there is no way to replicate the same explosive economic upturn we had in the 30's to 40's. The cost of goods has only increased in this time of crisis because businesses want to pull every shekel they can and hold onto it while the situation blows over, nobody is able to go to work (unlike before where jobs didn't want to hire people, now already-employed people are functionally restricted from their own jobs), income is literally frozen for millions of Americans, businesses being on lockdown for weeks (possibly months) will translate to billions in lost daily revenue, and when this is all "over" and in the clear, there will be no sufficient way to recover from this without either punishing the already wealthy businesses (which will literally never happen) or sucking yet more from the already struggling lower class (which will result in the US's poverty-stricken poor being incapable of living day to day). There is no solution to this downward spiral, and the response has been pathetically slow. It's going to be too little too late and devastate the most Capitalistic nation on the planet because of simple poor leadership.
