I went shopping today in the east bay, Safeway (fuck Costco). The usual cope shit, rice, beef, chicken, potatoes, tuna, bottled water and paper products gone, but a worker told me they're having shipments boosted, and once people calm the fuck down things will settle down, and plenty of everything will be available. Lines were about the same as before Xmas or T-day. Packed, but not crazy packed.

Most groceries these days aren't set up for this kind of demand. They don't hold stock long, because their margins are so thin as it is. So this panic buying is swamping their system, but they're doing what they need to, to keep shelves stocked - the guy said there are no actual shortages as far as the suppliers are concerned, it's just a matter of getting the stuff to the stores faster. They're also hiring at all stores (hint, NEETS), to restock faster.

I'll bet within a week the worst of the panic buying will taper off, and you'll be able to get whatever you want, when you want it.

I have food for two weeks, and I'm looking at some bulk orders on Amazon for dry goods. I'm not especially worried about getting food. We have plenty in the system, from all reports. It's just being hoarded by dumbfucks faster than normal schedules can keep up with.

How long until people stop panic buying? Do people just go back to the stores every single day and clear the shelves

I give it a week. Today spiked in the Bay Area because they announced the partial quarantine. Everyone rushed today to get food, because they think a full lockdown is coming. (It's not). You can shop for food for the next three weeks with no hassle. I went in before I knew they'd announced it, some guy in line told me, when checking out.

Most of it was old fucks, most young people weren't buying a lot. Every greyhair in the place had a cart with enough food for a month.

Everyone gathering together to spread Corona , is all I see.

The panic buying will go on for a few more weeks and then subside once this all starts to feel more normal. If this goes anything like it did in China, things will start to return to normal sometime in mid to late April. However, we're going to be in a recession by then so we'll have that to deal with next.

The shelves in SF were bare before the announcement actually. East bay people are lazy and poor and are probably going to end up standing in lines of 500 people tomorrow because they don't take anything seriously.
