The Great Gatsby (2013)

This film is one of the best adaptations ever made. Absolutely amazing on every level. I was surprised to find the critics were mixed about it. It's superb, sublime, fantastic.

The most common criticism I hear is, "Rap in the 1920's, come on," because some people literally didn't understand that the music you hear isn't the music they hear, obviously (I thought it was obvious...), just the same tune and rhythm, but you get your movie music while the characters get their 1920's music. It's not anachronistic at all.

Leonardo Dicaprio shines in this, and if anyone forgot, he reminds you of why he is one of the few true stars operating nowadays. What a genius. Elizabeth Debicki is a goddess, as always.

That's my piece about this movie. I am not autistic or mentally ill, so I like to love things, and I am not from any other website. Please be understanding.

I love how it captures the 1920's in a way that feels both realistic and completely fucking fantastically, without breaking realism. That alone makes it a work of art.

At first I was like, "Woah, they're going all in with this..." but then I serioused the fuck up and realised I was experiencing a masterpiece.

I know there are like 5 other film versions of it, but I am 100% certain nothing can ever come close to this, though I am curious.

Also, is it normal to feel in love with an actress in a film? This never happened to me despite having many actresses I adore, but Debicki is just too much for me.

I adore the sountrack, though I hate the Black Eyed Peas. It does capture that "new wave" feel and all.

Was there ever a better story about hopeless love?

That Flore/ance song hits in the fucking feels. I can't remember if it's with an E or an A. But goddam.

youtu.be/86ZBolp--Zo

It's an E.

Absolutely heartbreaking. Now whenever I see a fucking green light, I get all sorts of feels and thoughts about impossible love and I cry and freak out and shit. Just kidding. But I get feels.

The Great Simp

As I said, I am not autistic or mentally ill and I have a real life. I made a point of not learning any new memes, so I don't know what a "simp" is and don't want to know.

Please stop turning everything into your memes and mental issues. You're reducing your life experience to the same 3 common points and missing out on everything.

Only men of honor can love so deeply, as Gatsby did. When you are truly in love, the woman you love is everything. It's a crazy feeling. The best and worst times come from that.

>ending of the film is
a green light that disappears

Fucking had me on my knees crying. Film of the gods right there.

Never understand the hates either. Guess it caught between the rise of YA novel adaptions fad (whose mostly shit) thus it get aimlessly panned

People here like to hate things. It's what one does when one is not all right. The movie polarises a lot because it's fucking patrician, basically.

It's esthetic, it's beautiful, it's challenging. It's fun. It's feels.

why was his plot so convoluted?

>"Rap in the 1920's
I was thinking of watching it, but I wont now
Non period music in a period movie breaks the immersion
Thanks for the heads up

Style over substance kino

>why was his plot so convoluted?
>his
I don't see how convoluted it is. Will attempt to summarise it from memory.

Kek, fucker. It really suits the film because it's all done with the instruments of the times, but in a way that appears novel to us as jazz music was novel in that age, so it works out just fine. It really works. I agree it's a risky recipe, but it works like genius here.

>Style over substance kino
I hate this saying. Style is substance, and the material it deals with is pure substance no matter what. The quotes in that motherfucker are heart-rending.

One of my favorites, along Moulin Rouge.

>has fantasy vibe to it
one of the reason why had a hard time even attempting to watch this movie since it released because i dread fictional setting.

I have no idea what to make of this post. Is it sarcastic? Are you mocking me? Is this drawing supposed to represent me? I don't wear glasses, I have contacts, and I don't have a shitty beard, because I can't grow a beard at all. Thankfully.

It didn't, because I am educated and I knew the roots of jazz (remember, the movie is set in the jazz age) are connected to black people, as is rap music, and it made perfect sense to have rap in the soundtrack. It sounds just as new and upsetting to some people as jazz did back them.

Plus Jay-Z is a fucking genius.

I dare you to have zero respect for this man after knowing he speaks like that.

movie had too many cuts, it was like a mohel with parkinson's.

I read the novel after seeing this and now I hate the movie because it completely ruined Nick's character.

Thanks
This is what I was worried about
They added this music to a period film to make it more "contemporary"

It has some flaws, mainly that Leo is shit compared to Redford and her playing Daisy is so insipid I can’t even remember her name.

Book is in my top 10. I'm too biased and jaded to enjoy the movie. It doesn't do anything wrong, I'm just too invested in what has gone in my head after reading it a dozen times.

I enjoy it as well. I understand the dislike for the rap in the 20’s thing, but I enjoyed it. I remember hearing that they used current music because using old big show music didn’t seem to be hype for the huge Gatsby parties.

Gatsby’s death in this one was truly heart wrenching. The music. Tobey calling him, while Gatsby thought it was Daisy. Fuck.

nick and a few others. i try to just accept it wasn't something the film wanted to focus on.. but i don't think it would've had to sacrifice much or been much bloated by including such nuance

>it pulled you straight out of the mood
To this day, I still put these songs on to feel like it's the 19 fucking 20's. It never fails.

>bang
ti tu
>bang
>ti tu shamalalala
>bang

Jesus christ you really are an indigo child. inb4
>Again, I am not autistic or mentally unwell

>the music you hear isn't the music they hear
But we still hear it, and (aside from sounding like shit) it completely destroys the immersion of the period.

I love how the quick cuts make everything feel stressful and rushed. Fucking brilliant.

But user, Daisy is insipid.

>I am educated
You most certainly are not, you fucking nigger. The movie is set in the JAZZ Age so the music should be 1920's jazz.

>Jay-Z is a genius
LMAOOOOOOO
He's a good boy who has been allowed to become rich by genuinely affluent whites. Get fucked you delusional chimp.

>it completely ruined Nick's character.
It didn't ruin it. user, movies can't touch books. The book hasn't changed, relax. Likewise, movies don't change reality, relax.

I think Nick Carraway in the book is more interesting, while in the movie he's mostly an anchor. Too boyish and cute. But don't hate the movie for that, love the book.

the fuck did they do to Nick? I remember him being an introspective guy writing about all the horrible shit people do to each other. Eventually saying "fuck it" and dipping out without realizing he's just as judgemental as the lot of 'em.

why are white men so obsessed with the 1890s-1920s?

>They added this music to a period film to make it more "contemporary"
No, they did it because it sounds based. Here's why you're a hypocrite: you don't have that reaction when you hear classical music over a medieval story or something from antiquity. You're just upset because it's rap (and there's like ONE rap song in the entire soundtrack of the film, and you hear it for about 30 seconds tops).

>When we hear modern rap the people in the movie aren’t really hearing it
Wow OP you really are keen movie viewer

I didn't like this movie but Baz Luhrman is an underrated director

One of the things ai didn’t like that they changed was the outburst of Gatsby. He flew off the handle to do your classic DiCaprio anger.

That never happened in the book. He was scared that Tom found out about him and his money. Tom absolutely destroyed him mentally. Having a Gatsby lose his shit and pull the “poor people always gonna be poor acted” was a bit dumb.

>Leo is shit compared to Redford
Leonardo is never shit. He's a true genius. But now I am tempted to watch the Redford version, I dig that dude.

>her playing Daisy is so insipid I can’t even remember her name.
I grant you that. Debicki is all I had eyes for.

First reason I can accept for disliking the movie. I read it a million years ago when my English wasn't so good. I remembered almost nothing when I got to the movie. Chances are I would adore it if I read it now.

>He's a true genius.
You use that word too often. It clearly means little to you

Spoiler that stuff my negro.

Their last words really hit the feels, but I forget who says what now.

There was a video that explained it well.

Essentially Nick became the frame for the film and was whitewashed of his problems in the film. In the book it’s alluded he’s cheating on his fiancé, that he hates Gatsby for who he is in the beginning etc

They take that away and just make him a nice guy with no real problems.

You're right, though "indigo children" is bullshit gaia nonsense to co-opt a real condition that already has a name, but autism or mental illness isn't it.

I hope my existence doesn't upset you too much.

>everyone complimenting the movie uses reddit spacing
>everyone shitting on it types normally
this speaks volumes

>But we still hear it, and (aside from sounding like shit) it completely destroys the immersion of the period.

So when you hear classic music outside of the 18th century, you get buttmad too? I don't think you really do.

>electronic music for the soundtrack to a show in the 1950's
>nobody bats an eyelid

>rap music in the jazz age
>EVERY WHITE PERSON GOES CRAZY

>everyone shitting on it can’t get past “le nigger rap!”
>everyone complimenting has interesting stuff to say and have read the book

This

Speaks
Volumes

Checked.

I love everything Edgerton touches, so this got a solid thumbs up outta me
Plus we got the orchestral version of Lana's Young and Beautiful, which I used for my first dance at my wedding. Solid all around imo

>You most certainly are not, you fucking nigger. The movie is set in the JAZZ Age so the music should be 1920's jazz.
I explained above why it made sense. Rap music to YOU in 2013 and beyond is closer to JAZZ as it was in the 1920's. Can you understand the relevance or are you stuck on "you can only use the music that existed back then"? With that logic, why aren't you upset that the movie uses cameras that didn't exist back then? The soundtrack isn't part of the diegesis, just like the cameras, the angles, the editing, etc, there's no reason for you to get so austically stuck on the soundtrack.

>You're just upset because it's rap
I had that reaction to the contemporary music during the fight scene at the beginning of Gangs of New York too

Because they have a delusional idea of what they were. That's literally all, and it's only the mental unwell white anons who do that. They distort the same way they do about Jews, blacks, homos, and women.

I really enjoyed the Love is Blindness song. Great trailers

>everyone complimenting it has read the book
Based retard
There are several post talking about how the characters are butchered and how certain scenes are handled poorly. This movie is not a good adaption.
