I mean - She is unbearable like a lot of the female characters but in reality Æthelflæd went on to become the first female ruling monarch in Saxon/English history and was fairly beloved by Mercia. The writers just got write convincing respect without grand giant displays of conflict and victory.

Yes, which actually makes sense if you consider that Iberia was Andalusia at that time. Bernard Cornwall is pretty good at making diversity at least somewhat believable. In his Arthur series, Sagramor is a black Numidian but speaks terribly accented British and actually has a plausible backstory rather than just 'being there'
