as a stupid fat american I have never quite grasped the concept of different dialects in a language being so different that people speaking the same language might not understand each other. I assume that it's different from a mere accent, but I genuinely cannot understand some scotts. Limmy I know what he is saying, but the show Chewin' the Fat is probably 60% unintelligible to me. I've watched most of the show and I legitimately cannot comprehend a lot of it. It's still funny despite that.

The difference between some English accents would probably be considered dialects in other languages. Languages like French have an institution that classifies what is and isn't a dialect as an authority. We don't have the same thing in English.
