I'm not certain but I get the feeling he is a hilarious but idiosyncratic nutcase.

Despite repeatedly shooting himself in the foot - e.g. by pissing off Dick Ebersol at NBC - he's had a better career than 90% of professional comedians or more.

by being himself. he tends to make jokes that either get him boo'd or are straight up not allowed by his higher ups. Don't tell any more oj simpson jokes? how about more oj simpson jokes. Don't joke about non-pc shit? he'll do it

He's a mentally unwell loner. It's apparently really hard to get Norm to agree to do a project and when he does agree it's hard to get him out of his apartment and then even harder to get him to put in a real effort and not just fuck around.

-He was instructed to stop the OJ jokes on SNL and he refused, got fired.
-Then got given a couple of sitcoms and on the press runs called the president a murderer and said that the shows were bad so no point on watching anyway.
-Often when casted on films, he wouldn't show up
-Refused to make specials until Sandler basicaly forced him to.
-He made a fucking sports show on comedy central
-Started a podcast and picked some good traction then talked shit about google and made a bunch of random hiatuses killing momentum.
-Got a Netflix deal to bring the podcast there, a stand up special and a film adaptation of his book and at the first stop of his press run he talked shit about metoo and got all other press stops cancelled and his show and his movie

This is what i remember from the top of my head. Norm scholars might be able to say more on the matter.

Norm's in it for the long haul. His youtube show is unironically one of the greatest works of comedy of this century. The fact that it's not widely available anymore is a international tragedy. Norm will be remembered for a long time after his death after all the careers of all those currently successful journeymen are lost to the sands of time.

I agree, it's such a bummer that Norm has such a boomer mentality and kept needing the validation of "proper showbiz" and the tv world and kept seeing the podcast as auditions for a televised show. Instead of seeing it as the proper stand alone kino it was.

But then again if he had taken it seriously he might not have been as loose and it would've suffered.

Norm even admits he just said it to wind up the hosts because they seemed so worshipful of Clinton.

He's just not got the talent (and/or discipline) for scripted narrative comedy. Dirty Work and the Norm Show really aren't all that good, in comparison with his other work. Even the sketches he wrote on SNL aren't that good, when performed by others. He's a genius at what he does though do well though and undoubtedly one of the greatest comedians of all time.

I know that Norm must know that to be truth about himself but when i was listening the Conan's podcast with Letterman it stopped my run dead on it's tracks. That's when i realized i would actually be sad when Norm dies, maybe the only celeb that would make me sad since i got sad thinking how he would feel hearing both these men he really respects talking about him being lazy and being dissapointed on him for getting the Netflix show cancelled.

No, he means "Norm Macdonald Live!" it was a video podcast and it was fucking great. There are 3 seasons of it but it got taken off youtube when Norm got the netflix deal and hasn't been re-uploaded there yet.

I've been a fan of it since day one and found a torrent with all the episode on pirate bay after it was taken off youtube. It might feel retarded to pirate a podcast but believe me, it's worth it.

Since quarantine shit has started I have watched all 3 season on Norm and the movie dirty work. Enjoyed the fuck out of both because of the awesome jokes that come non stop. Love this funny man and glad he didn't make it and become an npc comic
