Quentin was a timer, an unexpected trap waiting to explode on everyone.
Without him everyone else would likely just sit around in the first room and not do anything.
He pushed them forward with his leadership, ensuring the people watching (some rich psycho's entertainment) that there'd be maximum pain instead of boring nothingness.
His history of hitting his wife/kids/whatever the old doctor theorized was noted by whoever captured him, Quentin was guaranteed to eventually go crazy and kill everyone to ensure his survival, and so the other characters would feel a sense of urgency to escape like rats in a maze only to likely all die horrific deaths.

I was surprised by how engaging the character interaction was despite the characters not really having much, if any, backstory. they're all just thrown together and the chemistry works out really well. i feel like hypercube tried and failed to hit the same mark

But the reveal was that the cube was out of any one individual's control and it was just this project that took on a life of its own and all the people who had a hand in making it were like the cells of a body, making up the whole but none of them actually controlling it or having a full picture of what they were contributing to which is basically a metaphor for how institutions in general become self-sustaining organisms of their own.

Makes sense, would be kinda bullshit if they just camped in the first room and unknowingly won the game when they finally rotated to the bridge.

Its an allegory of military industrial complexes and how all the people who work, aid and assist in the overall scene, unknowing to the horrors carried out, are still held accountable. Basically its trying to teach you to think outside the box.

Yup. It has been 10-15 years since I've seen 2 and 3. I remember the cannibal with the watches and the spinning floating mummy couple from 2. All I remember from 3 was it explaining the backstory of Cube and the retard from the first movie. I don't remember what those explanations are though.
