shit like j-horror, ichi the killer, oldboy/vengeance trilogy, audition etc. etc. any fans of this style here? any hidden gems within this niche that most people won't have heard of?
Anyone remember when edgy asian films got kinda big back in the early 2000s?
Tokyo Gore Police and Machine Girl are balls to the wall crazy, and cheezy as fuck. So stupid its good tier.

old website with a bunch of reviews for extreme asian films. images are missing unless you download the page for offline reading tho

Yes. I remember when some fag at AICN was hyping this piece of shit as being better than The Matrix and Evil Dead.
I don't have anything to add recommendation-wise, but Battle Royale was my introduction to foreign movies and I definitely have some nostalgia for the early-mid 2000s forum era where this kind of stuff was sort of what you "graduated" to after Pulp Fiction and Donnie Darko if you were a teenager into film.
If you like the films and that style of film why would you use such a dismissive (and trendy and gay) buzzword of the moment "edgy" to describe them? The films were extreme yes. They weren't "edgy" (implying tryhard to a detriment).
ichi the killer was cool when I watched it, was maybe 15 or something
For me, it's Suicide Circle.

Probably the most uncomfortable three minutes in a movie.
Looking at trailers, I think I still would enjoy it
I'm a huge Ichi fan but c'mon m8 that movie was edgy as fuck.
On the topic of Ichi, has anyone here ever seen the prequel, 1-Ichi? It doesn't have Kakihara at all but goes into the autist's sexual awakening and bullying in school and karate class. It wasn't really good I'm just wondering if anyone else saw it.
This movie fucking sucked. Looked so cheap. Can't remember anything else about it.
It was fun for a bit .
The Chaser is very good
I remember when the director of Ichi the Killer directed an episode of Masters of Horror and that was a big deal back then
Versus is fucking kino, thanks for reminding about it.
Confessions (Kokuhaku) barely fall under this umbrella, OP. It's not especially edgy or 'out there' but it will leave you feeling weird.
The first Raid is fantastic, saw that a couple weeks ago.
I remember when the director of Ichi the Killer directed a really really good live action Pheonix Wright: Ace Attorney movie and no one cared

Azumi was pretty fun. Cute girl and gory sword fights.
Are you talking about this?

I believe Kakihara is in it quite a bit.
the second too is great
Azumi sucked.
For Korean check koreanfilm.org
sion sono's movies
Nah, but I forgot the one you linked even existed. Is that the full series/movie/anime?
I just remember cringing, didn't find it funny at all
>I definitely have some nostalgia for the early-mid 2000s forum era where this kind of stuff was sort of what you "graduated" to after Pulp Fiction and Donnie Darko if you were a teenager into film.
this hit me right in the feels
ps. Bittersweet Life and 3-Iron are must watch, imho.
Anyone else legit hated I Saw the Devil? I see it recommended in almost every "korean films" thread and it falls under OP's category. But it's so fucking cheesy. The opening serial killer scene is terrifying(even though it goes into torture porn territory fast) but then it just turn into "late Hannibal sequel" schlock terriroty where every other character they introduce is some sort of serial killer.
>Cute girl and gory sword fights.
Just remembered pic related, which hits those two points better. It's also more of a martial arts flick.
Holy shit this. It's like some Koreans wanted to make a live action R-rated Tom and Jerry.
is Survive Style+ one of these?
good bad weird, a bittersweet life and i saw the devil are fun too
wtf I hate azumi now
I think it's short anime series, yeah. My father loved collecting controversial movies, especially the limited releases of them. One of his DVDs of Ichi The Killer had this anime bundled with it, but I don't recall much of it.
Thanks for linking this. Never seen it before.
