I think they got another season or two on contract but they really should end the show. It was real rough for a few years in the middle. New seasons have been pretty strong for a while. They should do another movie and end the show.
I think they should do one season where the characters grow up a bit, kids go to the next grade in school and some smaller characters get pushed into second or third acts of their own lives.

I managed to catch a glimpse of a recent Simpsons episode.

For me it was the constant current pop culture references that killed it off. Part of the appeal of The Simpsons is (was) how timeless it is. No matter how much your life change the show feels like it's still in the nighties. If you're going to set the show in the current year at least move the characters on with it.

He kept the show going earlier on because he got a divorce and needed money. Then he kept it on so they would make Futurama. Now it seems like he keeps it on so all the people who worked on it can finally make some money out of it. But if he felt like it he could just not agree to re-up and everything would end there.
