Some of Artemis's charecter seems to be intact (he is brilliantly smart, works with computers and tech/gadgets, he is also enfatuated with legends of Fairy folk.

Artemis Sr is away from home ALOT traveling for "work" but sends AFjr post cards for his "fairy collection"

AFsr goes missing whilst aboard the Fowl Star, news gets out from Intelligence agencies that Sr is a person of interest in majour roberries over the past 10 years. (Non of the rest of the family knee about this and are crushed at the news)

Artemis gets a phone call with a ransom request for his father the ransom being a ton of Fairy gold he has 3 days to deliver Artemis is confused at the term Fairy Gold, he quickly comes to the realisation that fairies exist and using clues from his father's postcards solves clues that lead him to Ho Chi Minh City.

Artemis gets the book, decodes it, reads up on the ritual and begins his search for an ancient oak, twisted water and a full moon.

Holly joined the LEP to follow in her father's footsteps with whom she was close with he also disappeared under mysterious circumstances she has been stuck on transport duties until Root sends her above ground to identify (but not engage) a troll she is shot to the surface in a pod.

She uses her last sparks of magic to heal a little girl who was injured by the troll at the Italian wedding whilst doing the ritual she is shot and kidnaped by Artemis and Butler.

She wakes up captive in fowl manor Artemis lays out his plan he tells him he won't get away with it and they people will come for her. Root finds out about Holly's kidnapping, and alerts all personnel for a full scale recovery.

Artemis and Butler fight off the LEP using holllyd helmet visor turned into sunglasses, Root and Artemis discus terms, root leaves the manor demanding Mulch Diggums.

Mulch breaks in to free Holly but is distracted by the wall safe behind a portrait, Meanwhile, Holly finds the acorn in her boot, destroys the floor and regains her magic. Holly escapes and find Artemis Mulch and Butler at the safe inside is the most valuable fairy treasure of all (The Aculos) and a note that reads "your father and mine" Holly's father and Artemis's where partner's in crime it seems.

Outside the LEP are planning another attack on Fowl Manor. The Troll. It storms the labour destroying everything and Injuring Butler Holly heals him, despite herself, maybe because of their newfound connection, Holly had grown fond of Artemis and his friends.

Whilst all the commotion with the troll is going on Mulch is doing what mulch does best stealing (he swallows the Aculos) the LEP pay the ransom and Bio Bomb the place, they enter the manor and become sick Holly realising it's because they are uninvited (apparently Holly tells Artemis the way to escape the Bio Bomb) the LEP retreat.

The phone rings Artemis tells the ransomer he has the gold, they are stunned how did an ordinary boy like Artemis manage to steal fairy gold "I'm Artemis Fowl, and I'm a criminal Mastermind"

The first book is about a criminal child genius kidnapping a fairy to ransom it for fairy gold so he can get enough money to search for his father.

I read the whole series as a kid and I got excited when the movie was announced like 6 years ago. it looks shit.

YA adaptations didn't go out of style or start performing poorly, they just burned through all of the biggest contemporary YA franchises to adapt. There haven't even been any wildly successful YA novels (or successful novels in general) for the past few years.
