Why did Fred and the Mystery Man team up to kill Dick Laurent?
do you honestly want to know?
yes
>where is it you think we’ve met?
this scene was so perfect but it ultimately went nowhere, shame
Can someone explain Lost Highway to a brainlet?
It's been awhile since I saw it but I just remember being confused as fuck.
I think most of it is pretty understandable; Fred thinks his wife is cheating on him because he himself is shit at sex, so while the story wants you to think he didn't actually kill Renée, there's a good chance he did. He also seems to have a paranoia about being recorded which is manifested in the form of those tapes being sent to their house and the mystery man chasing him with a camcorder towards the end (and probably also the police chasing him at the very end). I've heard numerous theories about how his transformation into Pete is purely a fantasy that occupies his mind while he's awaiting execution, and that Fred is imagining a better, more desirable version of himself who has a girlfriend he can satisfy, which slowly crumbles and get filled with the same paranoia and sexual frustration as Fred. On top of that, there's the whole mirrored image of Fred fearing he's being cheated on vs Pete, who's actively cheating on Alice (both played by Patricia Arquette), and the whole idea that the story is looping. Maybe it can be looked at as some kind of pergetory, which backs up something the mystery man says earlier in the film.
He definitely killed Renée. The first 30 minutes of the movies are his deranged memories of the events as he explains them to police.
What was his name again?
When I was super-high I watched it thinking it made perfect sense.
The bizarre jazz scenes that flash like lightning is the electric chair. Basically a dude is being put to death and we are watching his mind. The second story is basically his brain entering a 'dream' state as he is dying. The second story plays out similarly to the first but with different characteristics. The end of the film is closer to reality where he is being executed. The highway is the spirit transmigrating. His brain is in 'cope' mode. It's as if he's attempting to make sense of his execution... He's attempting to rationalize why he is innocent while being put to death.
I don't know how well that theory hangs up sober, but I'll have to re-watch.
Fren
>there's a good chance he did
he did. his denial is the point. also explains why he prefers to "remember things his own way, not how they happened"
Mystery man is Bill's pure violent rage personified.
It's more guilt than rage. That's why Mystery Man aggressively points the camera towards Fred - he's making Fred confront the truth about what he did to his wife.
The only thing I don't get is and why the whole story came full circle at the end.
One of my favorite scenes by Lynch
>t. brainlet retard
>the story wants you to think he didn't actually kill her
Did you watch the movie?
Why happened to Pete on that night?
Why did Alice disappear after entering that barn?
What did those visions of the barn being on fire being played backwards mean?
What did the photo of Renee and Alice together (and its subsequent disappearance) mean?
Why did Fred go to the motel and why was Dick Laurant/Mr. Eddy there with Renee?
Why did Fred ambush and kidnap Dick/Eddy?
How did the Mystery Man appear during Fred's fight with Dick?
Why did Fred and the Mystery Man kill Dick?
Why did Fred go back to his house to say Dick Laurent is dead?
NO, I don't hang out at gay bars, sir
what was the purpose of this character?
What is the appeal of lynch? What is wrong with coherence?
Sometimes it's fun to go down someone's mental rabbit hole.
This makes more sense than any other explanation so far.
You don't need to know
