Jay Leno was my first talk show host that I started to watch regularly. I would watch the opening monologue every night before bed and I liked his second segments too ( between monologue and interview)
Jaywalking and Headlines were usually pretty good. The satellite bits were really hit or miss.

Sometimes when one of his monologue jokes bombed and the audience groaned (usually due to tackiness or poor taste) he'd say "Oh yeah, I'm way off base. SHUT UP!" and the audience would laugh and that's been stuck in my head for a significant portion of my life.
This. I loved staying up for his monologues as a kid.

i agree with that, but his personality was the best for a talk show imo. he just made a good interviewer and he was actually quite funny
top 10 was shit.
but his interview style of being uninterested in his guests or even sometimes being an asshole was miles better than the usual ass kissery on these shows.

If you watched Leno over Letterman you are confirmed room temp IQ. Stole from Howard Stern (bioth staff and bits) and hated almost unanimously by comedians not only for his actions at NBC but his general character.
I feel sorry for all you kids growing up after the Carson years. Never knowing what it was like to have good late-night talk shows. All the modern ones Leno, Letterman, Conan, Falon, Kimmel, Colbert, Ferguson, and all the others are slow witted talentless hacks by comparison.
