I refuse to discuss the morality of the US dropping the atomic bomb (or strategic bombing in general) with anyone who hasn't seen this.
Why
My nice but dumb high school history teacher putting this on during my junior year was probably one of the best things I got out of high school and was unironically my formative moment of trying to see all sides of a topic at once.
Because they need to understand the rational behind proportionality, but also to give the broader context of the firebombing of Tokyo and the death toll it brought. Most norms think "100,000 little bombs ok, 1 big bad bomb not ok!"
using nukes is literally cheating
it got japan to surrender which saved millions of lives
this faggot ruined the world

LITERALLY NOT EVEN ONCE

The nukes didn’t have any substantive effect on Japan’s decision to surrender. It was basically a demonstration to Stalin not to fuck with the US.
the issue is now that the "anti war" spergs have gone full circle and identify as literal nazis, it is extremely disingenuous to get moral lessons from the side that didnt see civillian casualties as "collateral damage" but a useful way to reduce the numbers of the racially inferior people they would going to colonize , which was taken to an almost cartoonish extreme by the Imperial Japanese specifically who organized beheading competitions and Warhammer-esque literal plague bombing of Chinese cities
???
Hadn't Japan built it's citizenry into one big standing militia in preparation for a land invasion? And two entire cities getting vaporized had no influence on their decision to renege that whole plan?
Uh, no user. I learned in 6th grade social studies class that without the nukes we would have had to invade mainland Japan and that 400 billion US troops and 9 trillion Japanese would have been killed.
I'm sure he's real cozy with Israel
yeah sure, the threat of any city including Tokyo with its imperial palace going up in smoke if 1 enemy bomber gets through had no impact on their decision to surrender
Tokyo was already a steaming pile of rubble. There were literally no cities left to bomb after Nagasaki. The US had been systematically leveling every Japanese city with its firebombing campaign. Japan only surrendered after a formal declaration of war by the Soviet Union, which would’ve meant the home islands being invaded from both the north and south simultaneously.
I watched that recently. McNamara comes across as remorseful at times in WOR, Rumsfeld on the other hand comes across as a sociopath. Who's looking at a dictionary for justification of his actions.
This. If you think about it logically, the Russians won the pacific front.
1st bomb was for japan, 2nd bomb was for stalin.
McNamara on the lesson of the Vietnam:
>I do not believe that we should ever apply that economic, political, and military power unilaterally. If we had followed that rule in Vietnam, we wouldn't have been there. None of our allies supported us. Not Japan, not Germany, not Britain or France. If we can't persuade nations with comparable values of the merit of our cause, we'd better reexamine our reasoning.
Rumsfeld on the lesson of the Iraq war
>Some things work out, some things don't. That didn't
Reminder that Henry Kissinger is still alive.
WHO THE FUCK EVEN CARES
I DONT CARE

the best part was when he said "we were operating as war criminals"
Everyone has seen fog of war. No one has seen the gatekeepers which is equally good. imdb.com
Honestly the West seems to only target German war crimes but the Japanese probably killed more civilians overall
There's literally no excuse for anything Rumsfeld did. At least McNamara can say that the forces of history made some of the poor choices on Vietnam seem necessary at the time, but with Rumsfeld it's entirely on him and the people he knew having meetings to create situations that ended in absolute disasters.
Going by the look of his face, more like The Bog of War.
