We were still living off the fumes of the Cold War mentality of "US is best; don't give the Soviets any ammo to demoralize us" and the early post-9/11 era was when the country really went into overpatriotic mode to kill anyone who looked responsible.

Why is it a performers responsibility to come up with solutions for your life? He points out problems about life, if I disagree thats fine, but if I agree its my responsibility to do something about it. And what if he did offer solutions? What would that change? Its still up to the individual. You can lead a horse to water but you cant make them drink. In the end its just a performance and if you find it funny, agree, disagree, if it inspires you or if you continue to go on living as you do its your choice.
