what this show does well is that its produced in a a way its so obvious that TLC is just laughing in their faceses but they dont realize it.

It got so popular because it's authentic and real, which is what people crave these days in a world of everything else being fake and inauthentic.
It still has typical reality show splice editing where they basically formulate an entirely made up sentence cut up from different segments, but the basis of the show and the interactions are all real and not heavily staged like most other reality and TLC type shows.
You are seeing genuinely mentally ill weirdos who are usually 50+ in a relationship with an under 25 third world girlfriend. All of them think they actually love them instead of a meal ticket even when in most cases you can clearly tell it's pure meal ticket. It's just entertaining.
