The revisionist history around George Lucas is wild. First people say that he made the prequels as a soulless cash grab. Then apparently he never really put much work into the original films either and that was all Irvin Kershner and Marcia Lucas. And now I see people saying that it's his fault the new films such because he sold Lucasfilm to Disney? Give me a break.
The revisionist history around George Lucas is wild. First people say that he made the prequels as a soulless cash grab...
Based on nothing at all I feel like he's an alright guy who was great in his little corner doing his shit but who should never have been in charge of anyone
He gave 4 billion dollars from the Disney purchase to charity. Trash his films all you want, he is one of the best people in Hollywood. He's done more for the technical elements of filmmaking than any other single person since 1977.
He does indeed seem like an alright guy
It doesn't even make sense. We've seen what a soulless Star Wars cashgrab looks like in TFA and the Prequels couldn't be any more different to that mess if they tried.
For all their faults the prequels are the opposite of soulless. If anything, they had too much heart and earnestness that made them goofy at times.
I always find it interesting that the TLJ “a bold failure it’s better than a safe success” crowd was dead silent about the prequels.
Because they aren't actually a 'a bold failure it’s better than a safe success” crowd. They're a 'I agree with this movie on an ideological basis so I must defend it with whatever memephrase necessary' crowd. They couldn't give less of a shit about art
You hit the nail on the head. It's all faux-intellectuals who enjoy that it played fast and loose with the themes and triggered fans of the series. As if by liking it they're somehow superior. It takes a special kind of retard to champion a film that thinks it's clever for "subverting" a fairytale series for children.
>wild
Stopped reading there. Nobody respects your autist self-insert hero, fuck off back to your discord and take your three buddies who all write the exact same way with you.
>unironically being this angry
First (((they))) hated him from making the originals and becoming a billionaire, then he made Watto in the prequels and they literally lost their shit. The bashing was insane, from the same people who 10 years later would be praising the turds made by Disney.
They tried to rob him from his work by giving an award to his wife (for editing LOL) instead of him as director or writer. They tried to attribute the story to Kasdan but they forgot he wasn't hired until ESB. ANH was entirely Lucas and you can see that the storytelling is very consistant throught the 3 films. Meanwhile Kasdan on his own wrote TFA, a film that looks like it was written by a teenager who barely read any book and have grammar problems.
Lucas is literally the guy who created media franchise merchandising from recycled genre tropes in space, there is nothing pure or respectable about the man.
>Lucas is literally the guy who created media franchise merchandising from recycled genre tropes in space, there is nothing pure or respectable about the man.
You're an imbecile. It's purely accidental, he made stuff that was so popular there was a huge market for merchandise. Now Hollywood are thinking backwards, they want a huge merchandising market and make movies based on the stuff they want to sell. Lucas wanted to make the movies he wanted, not stay poor.
>Kasdan
There's someone who actually should have history around him revised. I've long suspected Kasdan is the luckiest guy in the world and just happened to be in the right rooms at the right times. The films he's praised for writing have numerous other's attached who I think are more deserving of the credit. The truth became apparent to me when he said Solo was his passion project. The movie he's been wanting to write for his entire career. And it was so painfully generic and by the numbers. If that's what was the end result of all his passion and combined creativity of his career there's something dreadfully wrong.
Lucas is literally an oildriller, produced a movie where a 1940s French woman falls in love with a nigger, and cried on Oprah that it failed because of racism.
>to charity.
Blackmail and money laundering modality. See the "extreme age difference romance" in first drafts of Raiders with Spielberg. Creepy. The most creepy. Was that all Steve's?
Trying to reduce Star Wars to "recycled genre tropes in space" is just the height of faggotry. It's a wholesome coming of age story in an exciting world with original designs and fun characters. It's one of the most pure films ever made and by trying to diminish it you just come across as a fool
the solo film had so many production issues that i'm not sure it's all on him
his kid is the one that worked on it on the late stage and their dispute with the original directors makes it even more ambiguous, and Disney always stick their noses and demand things to be changed
Lucas' biggest sin is release of the special editions of the original trilogy while making sure that the theatrical versions remain unavailable to the greater public. Quite a massive dick move.
And he also decanonized Genndy's excellent Clone Wars cartoon and he substituted it with that mediocre CGI thing made by his protégé.
Some of his decisions were plain retarded.
Of course Disney did far worse than him.
The character Indiana Jones was born in 1899. He was also supposed to be a really flawed person.
That film could have been directed by Akira Kurosawa himself and the script still would have been terrible. Disney's prints are all over it for sure, but there wasn't a single interesting flourish in any of the dialogue or story decisions. Kasdan is definitely at fault.
There's a reason those stayed as drafts and were never actually produced. Writers throw around all sorts of weird shit in the early development stages. I'm not ready to hang someone on one bad idea
Spielberg wanted him to be a drunk and a grave robber. Lucas wanted him to be a role model, so he wasn't a drunk and was a professor instead of a bandit.
Lucas is one of the rare visionary filmmakers that managed to advance technology in film making and pioneer tons of shit. Star wars was inherently home grown and american that nothing the jews has made has even come close to touching it.
The prequels had it's flaws but it had heart. The new movies have no heart at all which is why nobody cares about star wars anymore.
>they had too much heart
wasn't lucas autistic about outselling titanic and that's why the prequels had focus? i admit that there were some solid ideas on the prequels, but they weren't good films in general
some parts were good, like duel of fates or order 66, but the rest fell flat on its ass
The mishandling of the Star Wars IP has got to be the biggest fuck up in the history of the entertainment industry. Does anything else even come close?
The day little sub-20 year old prequel defenders like you started posting here was the day this website began a slow slide into the septic, faecal mess that it is.
Stop posting immediately. Someone, shoot him, or something.
I got to say that both the extreme degrading of Lucas's legacy which people did regularly prior to the sequels as well as the current ridiculous worship he receives now on this board is both ridiculous and revisionist.
i meant "why the prequels lost focus"
also:
>prequel defenders
retard i literally said the prequels were bad, come on
I blame the fans
>wasn't lucas autistic about outselling titanic
He made one comment about it when someone asked him. But RLM spun it to make it look like he was some money hungry freak. As if JJ, the Russos, and every other massive blockbuster director wouldn't have a similar conversations during production.
None of those things you said we're contradictory in any way.
What kind of heart are you talking about? The acting is wooden because George's direction was always dogshit, settings were sterile and control, and there was an endless amount of quiet that ate away at the drama. There was little emotional range outside of sheev evil rage, stoicism, and childish anger.
I get that some of the character designs were cool. Jango will always be my dude because Bounty Hunter was a great game. But he got fucked out of being cool because he just flew around in a jetpack a bit then got his head cut off by samuel jackson. They've always been bad movies. I know we're all here because we're all contrarians, but have some respect for yourself. Long lightsaber fights aren't the same thing as good movies.
Heart as in genuine filmmaking passion. Those characters and stories meant a lot to George. I mean shit, she spent over 400 million of his own money and almost 10 years of his life to make them. He was already a billionaire, there was no cynicism or corporate bullshit. No reason to make them other than because he wanted to. The worlds are sprawling and epic, there are lots of fresh and interesting designs, and the three movies tie together to tell a cohesive and epic story. A lot of thought and care went into the Prequels, regardless of whether the end product was something you enjoyed or not. That kind of heart.
>it's "spinning" something now to quote Lucas directly
Still seething over RLM, huh?
>there are people who defend Lucas online for free
explain to me how you're any different from Disneyfags?
Why does he take such ownership of Han anyway? All the important character development of Solo is done in ANH. All he does in ESB is pester Leia for a kiss in a hermetically sealed ship she can't get out of and then dicks around Cloud City for weeks/months waiting for his ship to be fixed but not for a moment bothered with 3PO missing until he's captured. The iconic line was improvised by Ford or rewritten by Kershner depending who you ask, not that it matters cause Kasdan hated that they changed it.
and his Solo dream project kind of implies that all the importnant Solo stuff happened to him during a weekend. Might as well end the movie with them having a sitdown with Kenobi and Luke.
