My gay bestfriend thinks this is the best movie. Can someone tell me why?

I'm not sure why my friends, coworkers & the Academy Awards all think this film is so good?
I just watched it, and I felt like half the movie was him eating eggs in a van w/ his GF bitching at him...

My biggest gripe though is the fact that they don't touch on the fear of death aspect at all. Like wtf? The only tension in this movie is: "is he gonna die?" and they just ignore it. IMO that's exactly the type of narrative necessary to make a movie like this interesting. If you've seen "Man on Wire" or "Last Breath" you totally understand. Those documentaries are exactly how Free Solo SHOULD'VE been made.

My friend said I wouldn't "get it" because I'm not outdoorsy like him, but frankly, I've been rock climbing 400+ times in my life lol. I wouldn't have watched this if it didn't seem interesting to me.

Was it an epic feat? Hell yea. Was the climbing footage badass? Sure. But that was only the last 20 minutes. What the fuck guys. Just what the fuck... Can someone tell me what I'm missing here???

ur friend probably fast forwaded to check for ass/nipples/abs and when he got none he just went about parroting what a grate film it was because thats just how parrots are when it comes to terrible movies

I watched it at the theater and was mesmerized with sweaty palms. Sorry you didn't enjoy it, user. I'll never forget watching it.

I skipped through the whole movie until the climb and just watched that part

Do you and your friend together? Does he own a small dog? Does he worry about his t-cell count? Also, is he single?

Would you hit?

Why would they keep bringing up death? To try and psyche him out? You're pretty stupid, OP.

If I were that rich and famous I'd be banging a chick with huge titties, cartoonishly wide hips, and a nice big dumper with a tight pooper.

See, that's the thing...
Apparently they don't talk about it so they don't "psyche him out." But come on-- How mentally weak is this guy? He can climb a mountain knowing he can die any second... But he can't verbalize & discuss that exact same thought without losing it? Lmfaoo. Pretty pathetic, not gonna lie.

Regardless, my whole point is that that discussion is necessary to create a compelling film around this topic. How you just gonna remove the juiciest aspect of this film and expect it to still stand on it's own?

Like this?

the dawn wall>>>>>>free solo.

I've actually heard this before but I haven't watched dawn wall yet. Def gonna watch that next so I can rinse my brain of this bullshit I just watched

Would've made the whole movie if he died

you'll be glad you did. every facet is superior. the story and people are so much more interesting and likeable. not sure why free solo got its dick sucked so much more. well, i am, because people are retarded and got sucked in by the sensationalism of its topic, without looking at its qualities as a film critically. i watched both with my wife and a couple we're close friends with, and we're all climbers, and it was unanimous that the dawn wall was vastly superior.

No, like this

Wow dude you may have just rescued me. Will report back...

>My biggest gripe though is the fact that they don't touch on the fear of death aspect at all.

what should they touch upon? I mean its pretty clear that this guy is doing something that will most likely kill him and he doesnt give a fuck because he thinks its worth it, you need that further explored?

Get new, not used, if you can.

Meru was better

They only asked him about it once and he answered like 3 words about it... I want to get inside his psyche and learn about his mental model that allows him to conquer such a crazy fear

So then this

really? Because i feel it was plenty touched upon as it was with the brainscan or him stating that he felt "perfect" whenever he did something like that.

Aside from those moments i think the actions really speak for themselves. Its a lot like Grizzly Man in that regard, you dont really need words to understand the motivations at play once you got a glance at their lives.

I disagree and I'm trying to understand why so many people feel this way. I didn't understand any of his "motivations." The brainscan scene only revealed that he's autistic, and then it was never again referenced or tied-in to the rest of the film...
