Yes, because since the early 80s, NBC suits have wanted to gimp SNL to save money and headaches. Get rid of hosts, get rid of music guests, and get rid of the show being live since it's cheaper for them to just spend two or three months in the summer, marathon filming about 200-300 sketches they then edit together into about 22-24 episodes.

Ebersol AND Michaels have defended keeping the existing format intact but everytime SNL hits a rough patch, the suits ALWAYS start making noise about getting rid of the existing format and reducing the show to a taped affair with no host or musical guest.
