It's worth noting that as the original simpsons fans (you know, ones with some actual taste) got fed up with the show and quit they stopped being able to review episodes, so the 'actual' rating of the later episodes could be said to be way lower

I would think so. Not because sn*d or the chart, but it was the last bastion of 90s pop-culture, optimism, and topics carried in episodes of the "original" show. Afterwards you sort of start to have "rebaked" stories (one of the Simpson parents becomes muscular *again*!). The original show ended when the 90s did.
