Lazzo DID really like MDE, I saw some episode of that Development Meeting streaming show he was on and he said World Peace was a great example of sketch comedy done right (this was post-cancellation).
I think Sam fucked himself by not toning things down a bit honestly. Lazzo had been too comfortable for too long (Boondocks had been off the air for 6 years at that point), so he really felt the pressure from Turner and Buzzfeed. If Sam had been more co-operative (deleted some tweets, maybe taken down the subreddit), he could've had his second season and still made sketches that pushed the envelope. Seriously, World Peace redpilled more people with subtext than his twitter or subreddit ever did. It makes me mad how stubborn both men were.

Season 2 would've been the last one unless it became really huge. They all had targets on their back long before Sam went Twitter mad. He said a few angry women were screaming at him at the May 2016 upfront party. The marketing team took it personally that Sam wanted to make the promo commercials when he was just an exciting newcomer, so the show barely had a campaign (although I think the really vague commercials popping up out of nowhere 6 days before air actually helped the show's ratings: youtube.com/watch?v=ehwkloPCtjU). Also some intern literally tried to destroy the show's master-tapes during editing.
Can you imagine having Mike Lazzo, Keith Crawford and Walter Newman in your corner, three TV veterans who KNOW comedy while the rest of the company is fucking out to get you. I think Sam loved making the show but hated the industry so made a nuclear bomb of anti-political correctness. He did what MDE did best and it was too brutal for advertisers. Nick was in it for the laugh, but definitely wanted more. Andy and Charls were full sincere though. While Sam was the main victim of public outcry and also the show's editor, Charls was like a kid in a candy store. I saw a Twitch stream where he was wearing an Aqua Teen beanie and reminiscing about old Adult Swim shows and he fucking loved them all, getting that show was his dream, no wonder he went fully crazy post-cancellation.
