No, they just did other bad horror. The genre as a whole is inherently bad and can't be "saved". This movie's major appeal is that it's japanese, and like most other horror, it's devoid of actual quality.

Original Ringu and JuOn were dogshit, but I really liked the American verions (just the first movie, the sequels are way worse than the Jap ones).

It is not that good, but i like the dark and depresive atmosphere it creates along the film
