They found that if you applied the old unintelligent-person's-idea-of-intelligent tropes to an "outlaw" theme, that was enough to make people buy something basically not very bright. Also it has an art movie accent, stolen from Bertolucci and Visconti. If you make bourgeous ninnies feel smart, you'll always score big with critics, who are mostly bourgeois ninnies.

No. The third one is good because Sofia Coppola's line delivery makes Stallone sound like Anthony Hopkins, but apart from that, it's not a great franchise.

I loved the first movie but thought Part II was a bloated mess (except for the Vito parts). Am I based or cringe?

Yeah Sofia isn't a conventional actor, she even dislikes acting in movies, but I thought her performance, bare some scene was really realistic way to play a teenager.
Of course it clashes with other actors because they're acting in a really dramatic way

i prefer the first one as well

i can definitely see how the second one can be viewed as the better movie but it just doesn't hold my attention like the first one (except for the vito parts), roth is kind of boring as the enemy compared to the other families in the first one.

The Vito parts were too simplistic and cliched. The Fredo/Michael relationship was by far the most interesting aspect of the movie for me but yeah the first movie is more tight and focused.

It's very good, but also overrated.

Apocalypse Now and The Conversation are easily better.

Try watching The Godfather Saga: A novel For Television. It's Godfather part 1 and 2 in chronological order edited by Coppola and including bonus footage. It's like 7 hours long but man it's a journey through one families history over multiple generations

I'm in the same boat. I finished 1 and 2 yesterday and they were good movies, but I'm not getting the extreme amount of hype they got. De Niro's parts in part 2 were excellent though.
