The HBO show was the best thing they ever did. Very comfy 90s feels and more grounded and nuanced in its humor than the Pick of Destiny. It was before Black's ego fully took control of him and he become an insufferable one-note bloated bagpipe of self-fellation.

Yep. I saw them twice in the clubs before the first album, seeing them on HBO at the same time was fucking great. Ever since they started doing stadiums, the whole thing is just too polished and sterile. They were great when they were an underground club thing - the whole point was they were a goofy club band who were great/shit at the same time.
