I know for police departments in general, and lab rats in the police don't need to be clever for their work. I'd still expect detectives (not just regular cops) to be able to detect something is worth checking out with the weirdo. Dexter has an unjustifiable irregular time schedule, always making up shit excuses even when he doesn't need to and is way too involved in the cases when he should be doing some very specific technician work and not care about the cases 30 minutes after.

The fact that he wasn’t the one to catch Dexter is the show’s biggest flaw. From episode one it was obvious how the series should’ve ended: Doakes catching Dexter, with Dexter maybe even saying he was glad it was him. This show is a crime against narrative writing.
