The issue a lot of people have with "retro" anything is that the tropes and commonalities they have been bombarded with for their entire lives were formulated in these "retro" productions and are thus old hat and boring as they haven't been refined to an easily digestible paste just yet in these early efforts. It's the same with film, music, literature, video games, anime, you name it.

100% agree. It's hard to get people to watch old mecha anime, because they see it as 'another show where the teen gets in the robot.' It's hard to explain that I'm showing them the original versions of that. To them it's all just a fucking Evangelion knock off. I showed a guy Ideon, and he complained it was too much like Eva... I just didn't know what to say.

There's something to be said for the old way of animating.
And although modern anime have some great animations, (Redline) it's hard to catch the impression of the old medium.

The other issue is that the recent influx of attention for dead genres of music (synthwave, retrowave, "80s nightdrive mix for late night tofu slow cruising delivery" or whatever the youtube name for it is) will also turn off those who want to rebel against anything popular.

I think it's mostly this in the end. There was good anime and bad anime then but it had to be drawn frame by frame. The best had real craftsmanship. A lot of today's best anime would be even better if made the old way. Theoretically anyway.

there's always massive clear outs at the start of each new seasonal change where the big properties like evangelion go on to the website. These days they reach ridiculous prices. I only mention this because most times a few cels can slip through the cracks and you can grab them cheap. You can also try ebay and yahoo japan auctions. I'd say stay clear from 2nd party sellers that arent on these sites as they ask for way to much
