Sure there was Ginger vs Marianne etc but we're talking about waifuism in the post-anime sense. Anime is full of waifus, almost built on it, but anyone would agree that the most iconic ones are Rey and Asuka.

He came in at the perfect time in the show, and gave Shinji the attention, security, and “love” he’d craved for during that arc. Remember by the time Kaworu showed up:

Shinji had nothing when Kaworu showed up. It was a really special connection and a great episode.

Sounds like you need to rewatch it. Shinji eventually got over his initial trauma of fighting Angels by ep 4 despite getting nearly killed each time he fought an Angel. The only time he goes away again is when EVA-01 was forced to cripple Toji.
Shinji wasn't whining anymore when Asuka showed up.
