Not really, sometimes, Destroyah or Kaiser Ghidorah, all the time
It depends on the movie really. He started out as a straight up villain, then because he was popular transformed into a "protector" and has been sliding back and forth in ambiguity ever since.
Strongest enemy is King Ghidorah, and yes he has died
Biollante was wasted potential. They had a terrific monster design and hardly used it, plus Biollante just peaced out and watched Godzilla walk away at the end.

Varies by movie. For some of them he's a force of nature and the people of Japan just sorta happen to be in his way. For others he's sort of a 'hero of Earth,' and that's when they got into the really campy shit in the 60's & 70's.

There was the aforementioned anti-Godzilla bomb, being thrown into a volcano, turning into a walking nuke and eventually melting down, being pumped full of coolant that essentially shut down his heart, almost being eaten alive by a giant alien, and just generally getting beat the fuck up.
Don't forget the Oxygen Destroyer which DID kill the first Godzilla.

Is Invasion Of The Astro Monster any good? It's directed by Ishiro Honda and features Rodan and Godzilla teaming up against Ghidorah, so I can't imagine it being bad, but nobody ever talks about it.
